David Smith is the author of the book, Bible Lessons From Our Pets. He has served in various forms of church leadership for 10 years and has managed large church facility operations for 5 years. David has a love for animals and people, and has a desire to connect others to the Lord using heart warming stories from our pets. God teaches David by using his pets, Bling and Dubz, to speak of His goodness and his love. All David seeks is for those to have an open mind and heart to see for themselves how God’s creation can speak to humanity. Post- “But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds of the air, and they will tell you,” says Job 12:7. Whether you are a Christian or not, there is plenty to learn from our funny house hold pets. From watching my cat, Bling, I have witnessed several life and spiritual lessons. Are there lessons that you can learn from you furry friend? Most certainly, yes! Below is a list of five life and spiritual applications that one can receive from their pets.

1. Unconditional love- Have you ever noticed that no matter what, your dog is always excited to see you? I have. My dog, Dubz, gives me the best greetings I have ever experienced. No matter how long I’ve been gone, or if I’ve punished him, or even if I haven’t given him the attention he always wants, Dubz always greets me with a burst of excitement and love. As his tongue probes every crevice of my face, and his tail moves at a rabid pace, I see what unconditional love can look like. Now I’m not suggesting we greet each other with a great big slobbering tongue, but that our expression of love can transcend our imperfections. My dog simply forgets the perceived wrongs that I commit and chooses to love me with all his heart regardless. What if we’d choose to look past each others inadequacies and love one another? This doesn’t mean that there are no consequences to our actions or behavior, but that we look at the person and not the individuals actions.

2. Fear- My Cat Bling has a funny personality. One of her favorite activities is going outside to hunt all of the disease infested rodents floating scurrying around our surrounding orchards. When she wants to go outside she will often let out a desperate “MEEOOWW” and run to the door, but when the door is open she will just stand, staring out at what she wants without stepping out of the door to attain her desires. If she wouldn’t let fear take over she could have had the desires of her tiny heart, but she waited to long and the door slammed shut. God doesn’t want us to live in a spirit of fear, but to boldly step into the life He wants for us.

3. Trust- I love taking my little Dubz out for walks around our beautiful Yakima Valley, and as we stroll along the roadway I pull his leash in close while passing cars zoom by. But Dubz doesn’t understand that all I want to do is keep him from danger, and he looks at me with those sad eyes that say, “Why won’t you let me be free?” I feel God can be the same way, pulling life’s leash in, on occasion, to protect us from life’s dangers. We may not understand, and think life is cruel, but it’s not, it’s just God’s way of protecting us.

4. Comfort-  During my dad’s fight with cancer a few years ago, I was fighting too. My fight was with depression. I was faced with the immanent loss of not just my father, but my best friend. I had a special relationship with him, and I didn’t know how to cope with the hole that his departure would leave. During this time my wife was an obvious comfort. But my Blinger was also a comfort to me in my time of need. She would curl up on my lap, and purr loudly as I pet my stress away. Life’s worries didn’t completely melt away, but for a moment the intensity of life was lessened. Bling was God’s gift to me at this stage of life. Psalm 9:9 shares this, “The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, and a stronghold in times of trouble.” God gave me the furriest stronghold He could, my cat, Bling.

5. Worry-  If you are like me, you have a lot of worries. I am a business owner and home investor, and sometimes work isn’t consistent. I sometimes worry that I will not find the right property to invest, or that I don’t find enough work in my business, and if I don’t, how will I pay for my impending bills? My first reaction is that I stress out, try to push along the process by hunting for leads, but that usually doesn’t get me anywhere. Then I exhaust my earthly resources and trust in God. That’s when God’s blessings kick in. It’s weird, really, when I let my worries go, God blesses me. My cat never has to worry about whether she eats, or is taken care of in any way because we take care of her, and God takes care of us. It doesn’t mean that we get what we want on our time frame, but that we will get what we need on His time frame. The key, in the mean time, is to not worry………
